Before French Derby day in 2009, Jean-Claude Rouget was regarded by most of his colleagues both as primarily a businessman and as annoying evidence that Chantilly was no longer the only place to train proper Thoroughbreds.
They wouldn’t refer to him as one of theirs. He wasn’t a “classic trainer.” He wasn’t welcome at the club.
Since that day, however, they have a hard time refusing to grant him that distin
